Every now and then, people feel the need to switch things up around the house. Simple modifications are easy enough, such as buying new furniture and repainting the walls. The extension’s frame will be crafted from wood, so lumber is one of the materials you will need. Pieces of lumber are available for purchase at the local home improvement store or at a lumber yard that specializes in the material. From the wood, rafters, wall studs, and floor joists are created. The wooden structures will not stand on their own of course, and you will therefore need fasteners. Almost any project involving a wooden framework will need wood screws and nails as well as the appropriate tools with which to work. Claw hammers, drills, screwdrivers, and ratchet sets all work in tandem when driving the fasteners home. Drill bits come in handy when pilot holes are called for.

The foundation and possibly a sub floor for the extension will require that you obtain concrete materials. Concrete is made from water, cement, and stone, and it is sometimes supported by cinder blocks while laying the foundation. Having a shovel close by is a good idea in case smaller sections of additional digging are needed. Be sure to clean off any residue from the shovel, especially if you have been using it in the concrete.

The material that you will often find making up the walls is drywall, a substance found at any home improvement store. The outside of the walls must be decided upon as well, and it must match the material found on the rest of the house. It might be brick, siding, or wood. The extension will need a roof as well, and that will require shingles and roofing paper. Tar is preferable to felt. In order to prevent water damage, gutters and downspouts must be procured.

When it comes down to it, building an extension involves many of the same processes as building the bulk of a house. Woodwork, foundation laying, and roofing are all aspects of a home that are applicable to extensions as well. Many of the requisite materials for a home are the same for an extension. Prepare for building an extension as you would a house, and you will likely be ready to begin.
